Cauliflower is a mild, versatile vegetable that becomes soft and mashable when cooked, making it appealing for babies beginning solids. It offers vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and fibre, supporting immunity, bone health, and digestion. Its soft florets and gentle flavour work well across many cultures and dishes.

Nutritional Information
Cauliflower provides antioxidants, choline (important for brain development), potassium, and plant compounds linked to gut and immune support. Choose firm heads with creamy-white florets and no dark spots. Fresh or frozen florets both work well; frozen can be steamed quickly while retaining nutrients.

How to serve cauliflower by age

Baby-Led Weaning

  • Finger food: Offer whole large florets with stems; cook until they should squish easily between fingers.
  • Grip tips: Stems serve as natural handles for babies learning to self-feed.
Safety: Ensure no firm or crunchy sections remain.

6–8 months

  • Purée: Steam until very soft, then blend smooth or semi-thick.

9–11 months

  • Provide small soft florets or chopped cauliflower mixed into mashed potato, quinoa, or lentils.
  • Try cauliflower mash, roasted very-soft florets, or veggie patties to build chewing skills.
  • Slightly firmer textures can be introduced while still ensuring softness.

12+ months

  • Offer small bite-sized soft florets for pincer grip practice.
  • Add to stir-fries, curries, soups, and cauliflower “rice.”
  • Lightly sautéed or roasted pieces can be introduced once chewing is more mature.

Choking hazards & safety

  • Raw or undercooked cauliflower is a major choking hazard due to its hard, fibrous texture and crumbly florets that can break into firm chunks.
  • NEVER offer raw cauliflower to babies or young toddlers.
  • ALWAYS cook until it should squish easily between fingers, especially the stems. Avoid small, firm, detached raw florets.
  • Always supervise during meals and ensure pieces are large enough for early grasping or small enough for experienced chewers.
