Eggplant (aubergine) is a soft, mild vegetable that becomes silky when cooked, making it suitable for early weaning. It offers fibre, potassium, and B vitamins to support digestion, heart health, and energy development. Its creamy texture and ability to absorb flavour make it easy to pair with many cultural dishes.
Nutritional Information
Eggplant contains antioxidants such as anthocyanins, along with manganese and folate, which aid cell growth and immune support. Choose firm, glossy eggplants with smooth skin and avoid those with soft spots or browning. Common varieties include globe, Japanese, and Caribbean types—all safe when fully cooked and prepared without added salt.
How to serve eggplant / aubergine by age
Baby-Led Weaning
- Finger food: Offer long strips or wedges of fully cooked eggplant that should squish easily between fingers.
- Texture: Ensure pieces are very soft and moist to prevent sticking in the mouth.
Safety: Avoid charring or tough skins for young babies.
6–8 months
- Purée: Peel (optional), steam or roast until very soft, then blend to a smooth consistency.
9–11 months
- Serve soft bite-size pieces mixed into lentils, stews, tomato-based sauces, or Mediterranean and Caribbean dishes.
- Mash into couscous, rice, yam, or roti fillings.
- Offer peeled or lightly peeled pieces if the skin remains firm.
12+ months
- Provide small cubes or slices for pincer grasp practice.
- Add to curries, ratatouille, callaloo-style dishes, pasta sauces, or grilled preparations (ensuring softness).
- Incorporate into fritters, dips (like baba ganoush), or veggie patties.
Choking hazards & safety
- Undercooked eggplant can be firm and a major choking hazard, so ALWAYS cook until it can squish easily between fingers.
- Thick or tough skin can be difficult for babies to chew—peel when needed.
- Avoid offering any raw pieces as they are too firm. Slippery textures may cause shifting in the mouth; cut appropriately for age.
- As always, always supervise during eating.
