Okra is a slim, tender vegetable popular in African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian cooking, with a mild flavour that babies often enjoy. It provides vitamin C, folate, and fibre to support immunity, healthy digestion, and early cell development. When cooked well, its soft interior and naturally silky texture make it gentle for beginners.

Okra contains antioxidants such as quercetin and polyphenols, plus key minerals like magnesium and potassium. Choose firm, bright green pods without bruising; smaller pods are usually more tender. Fresh or frozen okra both work well—frozen often offers great texture for steaming and mashing.
How to serve okra by age
Baby-Led Weaning
Whole okra pods, when cooked until very soft, make a fantastic finger food for babies from 6+ months. The long shape is easy to grip, and the soft texture is safe for them to gnaw on. You can also pre-load a spoon with okra purée for them to practice with.
6–8 months
Smooth purée
Steam or boil whole okra pods until very soft, then blend into a smooth purée. The natural mucilage creates a silky texture. Mix with lentil or chicken purée.
9–11 months

Choking hazards & safety
Sliced okra rounds can be a choking hazard due to their circular shape. Ensure they are cooked until very soft for babies under 12 months. For younger babies, serve whole cooked pods or as a purée. Okra’s slippery texture may cause sliding in the mouth, so always supervise and keep pieces appropriately soft and large for the child’s age
