Plums are juicy stone fruits with a sweet-tart flavor and a soft, tender texture when fully ripe or lightly cooked. They provide vitamin C, vitamin K, and fibre, supporting immunity, digestion, and healthy gut function. Their naturally soft flesh makes them appealing to babies once seeds and firm skin are properly managed.
Nutritional Information
Plums contain antioxidants such as polyphenols and beta-carotene, plus potassium for hydration and cell health. Choose plums that are slightly soft when pressed—firmer plums may need cooking to be safe for babies. Fresh or frozen plums work well; avoid tinned versions with added sugar or syrup.
How to serve plum by age
Baby-Led Weaning
- Finger food: Offer large ripe plum halves (pit removed) or soft wedges. Pieces should squish easily between fingers.
- Grip tips: Leave a thin strip of peel on for grip, but remove before baby chews if tough.
Safety: Avoid firm plums or small cubes.
6–8 months
- Purée: Steam peeled plum halves (pit removed) until very soft, then blend or mash.
9–11 months
- Serve soft peeled slices or mashed small chunks as chewing improves.
- Mix chopped plum into porridge, yogurt, rice dishes, or millet pap.
- Stew plums into a thick, spoonable compote to add texture.
12+ months
- Offer pincer-grip pieces of fully ripe plum, peeled if skin is firm.
- Add chopped plums to fruit salads, muffins, smoothies, or warm oatmeal.
- Encourage toddlers to practise fork spearing with soft slices.
Choking hazards & safety
- Firm or underripe plums are a major choking hazard due to their dense texture and slippery skin.
- NEVER offer firm raw slices or pieces containing any part of the pit.
- ALWAYS ensure plum pieces should squish easily between fingers before serving. Peel if the skin is tough or resistant.
- Keep baby upright and always supervise during meals to avoid slippage-related choking.
