Rice is a gentle, easy-to-digest grain that serves as a wonderful first food for babies around the world. Naturally gluten-free, it provides slow-releasing energy and key nutrients like iron, magnesium, and B vitamins, which support growth, metabolism, and brain development. Its soft, mild texture and neutral flavor make it versatile and well-tolerated, especially for sensitive tummies.

Nutritional Information
Rice provides essential carbohydrates for energy, along with small amounts of protein and trace minerals such as selenium and phosphorus. Brown rice offers more fibre and nutrients than white rice, but white rice is softer and easier to digest for young babies. Choose plain, unsalted rice and cook thoroughly. Avoid pre-seasoned or instant varieties that contain salt or flavoring. Many African, Caribbean, and Asian cultures prepare rice as a weaning staple—just ensure it’s plain and soft for little ones.

Baby-Led Weaning

From 6+ months, you can offer overcooked, sticky rice pressed into a small ball or log shape for baby to easily pick up. This is a great way for them to practice self-feeding with grains.

6–8 months

Smooth Porridge (Congee)
Cook rice with extra water until it becomes very soft and breaks down into a smooth, mushy porridge. It should squish easily between your fingers. You can blend soft-cooked rice with breast milk, formula, or water to achieve a smoother texture if needed, and mix with vegetable or fruit purées for flavour and nutrition. Ensure the rice is fully cooked (never dry or undercooked) and allow it to cool before serving.

9–11 months

Soft, Well-Cooked Grains
Serve well-cooked, soft rice mixed with dhal or yogurt so it clumps together, making it easier for your baby to pick up and eat. Offer the rice in soft clumps to encourage chewing and self-feeding. You can mix it with mashed vegetables, lentils, or finely shredded meat for added texture and nutrition, and begin introducing lightly mashed rice with mild spices or herbs to help your baby explore new flavours.

12+ months

Regular cooked rice
Serve regular cooked rice as part of meals with curries and vegetables. You can also offer mixed rice dishes such as soft fried rice made with finely chopped vegetables and scrambled egg, or jollof-style rice prepared without added salt. Combine rice with beans, yogurt, or soft curries to create balanced meals, and encourage your child to practice self-feeding with a spoon.

18+ months

Can be served as part of all family meals.

Choking hazards & safety

Plain, well-cooked rice is generally a low choking risk when it is soft and moist. Individual grains are not considered a choking hazard, but the rice must be fully cooked until it squishes easily between your fingers to ensure it is easy to swallow. Avoid dry, hard, or undercooked rice, as this can be difficult for babies to manage. Never offer raw or hard rice. Rice cakes or puffed rice should also be avoided before 12 months because their dry, firm texture can increase choking risk. Always supervise during meals and ensure the rice has enough moisture so it does not clump in the mouth.
