Tomatoes are juicy, vibrant fruits (often used as vegetables) that bring color and gentle tanginess to your baby’s meals. They’re rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that supports immunity, eye health, and cell protection. Their soft texture and mild sweetness—especially when cooked—make them a perfect early food for babies exploring new flavors.
Nutritional Information
Tomatoes contain potassium, folate, and antioxidants that aid heart health and digestion. Choose ripe, red tomatoes that are slightly soft to the touch and fragrant. Fresh tomatoes are best, but canned or tinned versions without added salt or sugar work well for sauces and stews. In African, Caribbean, and Asian cuisines, tomatoes are often used as a flavorful base for soups, stews, and purees.
How to serve tomatoes by age
Baby-Led Weaning
- Finger food: Offer large wedges of soft, cooked and peeled tomato that should squish easily between fingers.
- Texture: Soft, juicy, and easy to mash.
Safety: Remove skin and seeds for easier digestion and reduce acidity with a drizzle of olive oil if needed.
6–8 months
- Puree: Steam or simmer peeled tomatoes until soft, then blend for a smooth sauce or mix with lentils or rice puree.
9–11 months
- Serve small, soft pieces of cooked tomato or mix into pasta, porridge, or scrambled eggs.
- Offer halved cherry tomatoes only if cooked and peeled.
- Encourage self-feeding by mixing chopped tomato into couscous or rice dishes.
12+ months
- Offer quartered or diced fresh tomatoes (skin on if baby can handle it).
- Add to sandwiches, omelettes, or stews for flavor and texture exploration.
- Introduce raw tomato slices or cherry tomato quarters with other soft foods.
Choking hazards & safety
- Whole cherry or grape tomatoes are a major choking hazard.
- Their round shape and slippery skin can easily block the airway.
- NEVER offer whole or even halved cherry tomatoes to babies under 12 months.
- ALWAYS quarter them lengthwise or cook until soft—it should squish easily between fingers.
- Avoid dried or sun-dried tomatoes, which are chewy and hard.
- Always supervise during meals, especially when introducing new textures.
