White yam is a starchy root vegetable enjoyed across Africa and the Caribbean for its creamy texture and naturally mild flavor, making it ideal for babies beginning solids. It’s rich in vitamin C, potassium, and fibre, which support immunity, heart health, and digestion. Once cooked, yam becomes soft and smooth, perfect for mashing or finger feeding.

Nutritional Information
White yam provides complex carbohydrates for steady energy and contains B vitamins that aid in brain and nervous system development. The fibre supports gut health, while potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Choose firm, smooth yams without bruises or mold. Fresh yam is best—avoid fried, salted, or pre-processed versions often used in adult meals.

Baby-Led Weaning

From 6+ months, offer large, finger-length spears of yam that have been boiled or steamed until completely soft and can squish easily between fingers. The shape is easy for a baby to hold, and the soft texture is safe for them to manage. You can also offer a pre-loaded spoon of mashed yam.

6–8 months

Smooth purée or thick mash
Peel, boil until very soft, and mash or blend into a smooth purée. Mix with a little breast milk or formula to achieve a smooth consistency. Avoid pounded yam at this stage as it can be sticky and difficult to swallow safely.

9–11 months

Soft, graspable spears or mashed
Serve soft-boiled yam as finger-length spears or in small, soft cubes, and allow your baby to practice self-feeding with pieces or preloaded spoons. Mashed yam can be served on its own or combined with lentils, beans, vegetables, or meat purées to add texture and nutrients. For extra healthy fats, try lightly mashed yam with a drizzle of oil or mix it with mashed avocado.

12+ months

Bite-sized pieces
Serve soft-boiled or baked yam pieces as a finger food or side dish, offering them as bite-sized cubes or soft patties made from mashed yam. They can be combined with flaked fish, eggs, or mild stews for added flavor and nutrition, while encouraging independent eating and the use of utensils to support skill development.

18+ months

Regular pieces
Can be served as part of family meals, such as in a yam and vegetable stew.

Choking hazards & safety

Raw yam is very hard and is not safe for babies. Ensure yam is always cooked until completely soft — it should be easily squashable between your fingers. Hard or undercooked pieces are a significant choking hazard. Cut into age-appropriate pieces and always supervise during meals. Avoid adding salt, butter, or oil that may make pieces slippery.
